When should a child be evaluated by a neuropsychologist?
Family physicians, neurologists, school psychologists, teachers, and others
refer children to a pediatric neuropsychologist for varied reasons:
- Attention difficulties (ADD/ADHD)
- Learning differences or disabilities
- Socialization problems (autism,
Asperger’s Syndrome, nonverbal
learning disabilities)
- Behavioral disorders
- Psychological conditions (anxiety, depression,
mood swings)
- To measure the effects of an accident, disease, or genetic
disorder
- Other issues affecting a child’s ability to learn and advance
in school, such as auditory or visual processing difficulties
- To establish
a baseline for tracking developmental and educational progress
- To determine
giftedness, special talents, and individual strengths and weaknesses
